Description

The Choir of The Queen’s College, and their director Owen Rees, here join forces with the Brook Street Band for the first ever pairing on disc of settings of Dixit Dominus by Alessandro Scarlatti and
George Frideric Handel.

The choir and orchestra are joined by five of Britain’s brightest young solo singers: soprano Elin Manahan Thomas (star of the Paralympic opening ceremony), mezzo-sopranos Esther Brazil (alumna of Queen’s College) and Sally Bruce-Payne, tenor Guy Cutting, and bass-baritone Matthew Brook.

The Brook Street Band, founded by a Queen’s alumna, are Gramophone award winners and acknowledged Handel specialists.

Handel famous setting of Dixit Dominus – a work of extraordinary youthful exuberance – was written at the beginning of the composer’s career, when he was in Rome. Handel absorbed the most up-to-date Roman styles of sacred music, and this recording allows the listener to hear how he was influenced by – and outdid – Scarlatti’s setting. Both works respond with tremendous imagination to the vivid images of the psalm text.
