St Hugh's College

St Hugh's College, founded in 1886 by Dame Elizabeth Wordsworth - great-niece of the Lakeland poet - was originally a female-only college at the University of Oxford. It was established to give poorer women the opportunity of a university education, and - like St Anne's College - signified a radical movement at the time.

A century later, in 1986, St Hugh's College began admitting male students, and now counts equal numbers of young men and women amongst its students. Its revolutionary origins, however, have not been forgotten.
