New College
Belying its name, which replaces its official name of the College of St Mary, shared with Oriel College, New College was established in 1379 by the Bishop of Winchester. In the days of the Black Death, the clergy was hit hard, and New College was founded to train replacement clergy.
New College became the first institution at the University of Oxford to admit undergraduates, and has developed a reputation for academic success as well as a choir, which - like Magdalen College - has enjoyed nationwide fame.
