Papal Legate Scarf - Silk

Square silk scarf in dark blue and white featuring the Oxford skyline and a design adapted from The Award of the Papal Legate of 1214; the oldest document owned by the University of Oxford. A Papal Legate is a personal representative of the Pope to foreign nations who is empowered on matters of Catholic Faith and for the settlement of ecclesiastical matters. The Award of the Papal Legate is the earliest document in the University Archives and settled a dispute between the University and the town which began in 1209, centring on the hanging of two clerks for the alleged murder of a woman and the migration of most of the scholars. The award was the first of many such adjudications which almost invariably settled local differences in the University’s favour. In addition it provided for the appointment of a chancellor, the first reference to such an officer.
