Oxford – A Sketch Book by Fred RichardsPosted on August 24, 2010 by Tom
The Oxfam bookshop on St Giles is always a real pleasure to browse. Amongst today's finds was Oxford - A Sketch Book by Fred Richards, published in October, 1923. A little research, and it turns out that Frederick Charles Richards was a Newport man who studied at the Royal College of Art. The book was commissioned in 1913 by Adam and Charles Black as the first in a series covering subjects of cultural and architectural interest. It's a fascinating collection. Many of the scenes that Richards sketched remain unchanged - more people and fewer horses, but it's the same timeless Oxford.
